“The Gambling Support University Tour” is a joint initiative launched by GamStop in collaboration with award-winning educational charity YGAM. In addition to the application RecoverMe, which is a mobile health application that helps punters who suffer from the problem of gambling addiction.

In its first round, the initiative representatives visited several universities, namely:

  • Northumbria
  • Central Lancashire
  • Worcester
  • Sheffield
  • Bournemouth

During their visits, the initiative representatives spoke to students and university staff about the serious harms of gambling addiction. In addition, they introduced them to the training and support services they provide, distributed leaflets and dealt with their inquiries.

Although university presidents believed that this initiative would not resonate with students, the opposite happened! They found strong interest in the problem on the part of the students with many people visiting the booth daily asking questions about their own or an acquaintance's gambling behaviour.

On the other hand, many students expressed their suffering from the problem of gambling addiction, which causes them to miss appointments and lectures and lag behind their peers.

YGAM offers free problem gambling prevention training to staff and students alike. In addition, it provides them with protective evidence to help them identify signs of gambling-related harm. And what signs can be given to students with a gambling problem. This organization also promotes the Student Hub which provides students with lots of tips and advice on this issue.

Alarming Statistics About Gambling Addiction Among University Students

The reason GamStop, YGAM, and RecoverMe launched this initiative is a Censuswide survey of 2,000 student participants that found that 80% had gambled at least once, and 41% of them admitted that gambling had negatively affected their academic achievement, Including absences from lectures, missing deadlines, abandoning their social activities.

The study also revealed that 35% of student gamblers were gambling using their credit cards, student loans, or borrowing from friends to play at online casinos and sports betting sites. Moreover, one in five used their student loans to gamble.

The average money students spent on gambling was £31.52 per week. Moreover, one in five students admitted that they spend more than £50 on gambling, while four in ten gambles at least once a week and 63% of them gamble at least once a month.

These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of problem gambling among college students. Although the stereotypical image of a gambling addict is an old man who does not stop playing slot machines, it is clear that young people have problems that bother their parents as well.

As early as 2022, the UKGC decreed that gambling operators must thoroughly check the players' age to eradicate underage gambling. Moreover, the UKGC stressed the importance of checking the sources of funds a player uses to gamble. And has also abolished the use of credit cards for gambling.

What Are the Outcomes of The Gambling Support University Tour?

The primary goal of this initiative was to raise awareness of problem gambling. And urge students who struggle to seek help. And protect students at risk of gambling addiction.

“The college premiere tour has achieved its goals,” said Fiona Palmer, CEO of GamStop. “Although the problem gambling is not usually discussed in universities. The latest statistics provided by the Censuswide study raise red flags and require us to act quickly to overcome it.”

On the other hand, Daniel Bliss, Director of External Affairs at YGAM, stated: “The popularity of the tour shows us that universities are becoming more aware of the problem gambling harms”. Although universities focus on alcohol. And drug abuse, it is also necessary to focus on problem gambling because it is no less harmful.”
