GamStop has released its annual report on the number of registrants to the free national gambling self-exclusion scheme.

The bi-annual report showed that the number of registrants increased by 25% year-on-year in the first half of 2023.

This percentage represents 40,000 people who signed up for the scheme during the first six months of 2023.

This is the highest bi-annual figure since GAMSTOP's launch in 2018. Now, as a total, GamStop members stand at 220,000.

Males Versus Females

The report also showed that 70% of GamStop registrants were male, while 30% were female. Although males are still the majority in the GamStop scheme.

The percentage of females has doubled from the previous report, which means that the number of gamblers who suffer from gambling addiction is also increasing.

What are the Ages of GamStop Participants?

In terms of age, 59% of GamStop members were between the ages of 18 and 34.

This is another surprise because the stereotype of a gambling addicted is an older person who does not stop playing slots. Teenagers and young adults are the most affected by gambling addiction. Especially with the increase in advertising carried out by online gambling companies.

In a related context, a report prepared by Censuswide in partnership with GameStop revealed that more than 2,000 university students borrowed money to gamble.

Therefore, GamStop organized a tour of British universities to introduce the dangers of gambling among young people.

What Is the Most Chosen Exclusion Period?

It is clear that most users would like to stop gambling permanently as 58% of the participants chose the longest possible self-exclusion period which is five years.

It is possible that GamStop might consider offering the permeant self-exclusion option due to the high demand for the longest-ever self-exclusion term.

Who Are Most Likely to Use GamStop?

As part of the GamStop user review process, GamStop has hired research agency Sonnet to undertake research to assess the scheme effectiveness.

This agency surveyed 3,300 users and found that the national self-exclusion scheme is used by a wide range of ages, ethnicities, and economics.

About 89% of GamStop's users were white, 3% Asian, 2% black, and 1% mixed. These statistics do not necessarily indicate that whites are addicted more than others. But they reflect the population of the United Kingdom!

What Is the Economic Situation for GamStop Users?

The socioeconomic status of GamStop users is diverse and does not reflect gambling addiction limited to a limited group.

29% of users live on £48,000 a year, and 48% of households earn more than £32,000 a year.

In terms of work, more than 75% were working full or part-time, while 63% of users do not have families or children, which means that gambling losses are less severe for them.

What Do These Numbers Mean?

“While the increase in the GamStop’s registrations reflects the success of this service, it is also worrying to see such a huge increase in such a short period,” said GamStop CEO Fiona Palmer.

“In order to understand the causes of gambling addiction more deeply, we must know who are using our service. And raise the awareness of groups exposed to gambling addiction about GamStop services.”

“Our analysis of GamStop users shows that the harm of problem gambling affects all people, male. And female, rich and poor, young and old. So, it is essential that we try to reach all people in the UK. And inform them of the different services we offer and ways to help them recover. Prevent them from falling into the problem of gambling addiction.”

How Effective is Registering to GamStop Reports in Reducing Problem Gambling?

The previous July, GamStop published a report of 1,700 members about their gambling habits after signing up for GamStop.

Of this total, the vast majority (1,230) said they don't gamble at all, while 471 registrants were still gambling in some way.

Among the category that was gambling, 300 people were gambling in traditional casinos, while 200 people were gambling at non GamStop casinos.

Self-Exclusion Awareness Is Still Limited Among Gamblers!

This review comes after the UKGC published its survey which found limited knowledge of the safest gambling tools among players who had gambled in the past 12 months.
